Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson is the Executive Director of the IMAG History and Science Center. IMAG is a multi-disciplinary museum and educational center that provides guests the opportunity history and culture of Southwest Florida while getting hands-on with the sciences that shape our world. After leading the successful merger of the City of Fort Myers operated Southwest Florida Museum of History and the Imaginarium Science Center, Johnson became the founding leader of the new independent IMAG.

Johnson has been involved in Florida tourism since 2001. After receiving a degree in History from Florida Gulf Coast University, he was hired as the Education Manager and Historian for the Museum of History. That role lead to his appointment to manage the City of Fort Myers Department of Cultural and Historic Affairs. This role included operating the Southwest Florida Museum of History, the Imaginarium Science Center, and the historic Langford-Kingston and Murphy Burroughs Homes. During his tenure with Fort Myers, Johnson also managed the Harborside Event Center, directed the Community Development Department and served as the Assistant City Manager.

Outside of city and museum operations, Johnson has served many local and state organizations including Chairman of the Board of the Florida Attractions Association, founding member of the STEM Team of SWFL, Leadership Lee County, founding executive of Boy Scout Troop 314, City of Fort Myers Economic Development Advisory Board, and many more.

Johnson’s top priority is always family. He met his wife Shannon while she was volunteering at the Imaginarium. They have three children Halston, William, and Eleanor. The entire family loves spending time exploring the beautiful Southwest Florida waterways and visiting the many attractions that make Florida the top family destination in the World.
